The Steelers aren't bad for any of the reasons you predicted them to be bad for, so that doesn't really justify anything.

Because he's a meatball? You can't expect intelligent posts from him ever, so we should just ignore it.
Brad Johnson protects the ball, like he did on Monday night, with three picks. Yeah. |

I think people really underestimate how important the Bus was to the Steelers.

![]() Because Johnson is a veteran. He has proved that he can win. It's the reason he still has a job in the league. Right now he has a bad Minnesota team in the thick of things for a wild card birth. Roethlisberger had a good year (nothing record breaking) and won the Super Bowl. Winning the Super Bowl does not automatically place you in an elite group and make you a Hall of Famer. It does not grant him a place along side guys like Montana and Elway. A guy like Brady is on his way there, not "Big Ben". Just as winning the Heisman does not guarantee you a long NFL career. |

Look at last year's rushing stats compared to the first half of this year. Last year Pittsburgh rushed the ball a total of 549 times for 2,223 yards (good for 3rd in the AFC) with 21 TDs. They averaged 138.9 yards per game and 4 yards per carry. Through 7 games this year they have 204 attempts for 773 yards (good for 9th in the AFC this year, behind Oakland) and 6 TDs. They are averaging 110.4 yards per game and 3.8 per carry. They were 11-5 last year and won the Wild Card and 2-5 so far this year. If their rushing stats continue this way, they won't come close to what they did last year... thus making losing "The Bus" all that more important. |

Yeah, that was the point, he choked in the SuperBowl. I've said this before and I'm gonna say it again, if I could pick one QB that's clutch and will come through in a game that counts like that, it's Tom Brady.

And just to close the Johnson arguement.
In only 9 games last year he was 184/294 for 1,885 with 12 TDs and 4 INTs. Compare that to Roethlisberger's "elite" Super Bowl Champion stats. |

The Steelers still have Willie Parker no? 1,200 yards last year
I guess Bettis was the man at getting 1 yard TD runs last year though, that 386 rushing yards being taken off the team is definetly why the Steelers are playing bad. |

It has nothing to do with how many yards Bettis got last year and it has everything to do with teams having to play the run from two different styles and respecting both at any given moment.

The Steelers are awful right now because of Roethlisberger. Its that simple. he's been awful and his other side stuff like the motorcycle accident and appendectomy the concussion are distractions because he continues to play through them and play poorly. Hell, he's tied for the league lead in interceptions with Charlie Frye.

What also hurts is that when Bettis and whomever else were there, he never had to do much, maybe make the occasional big throw. Now, the team gets behind and he HAS TO make plays. A bit different than before.
Also, the defense hasn't been as good. This is both cause and effect of Joey Porter's injury. Thought he did play last week, they need to go back to what made them good, a run heavy offense and that kept a vicious defense on the sidelines and fresh. |

OK, Joey Slugs, seriously just take that back.
Ben Roethlisburger is not only a better quarterback than Brad Johnson, but he is younger, has more potential and has won just as many Super Bowls. The only reason the Vikings are in the "thick" of the wildcard chase is because the defense has been solid and the NFC, especially NFC North, is awful. |

Which is why I don't get this... why aren't there more 250 pound HBs in the league? Take the Vikings... their "bruiser" back is 215. What the fuck is that? And Brad Johnson played against very poor teams when he was "successful" last season. Facing the Steelers and the Ravens and the Giants, he was embarrassed. He's like my brother... he can torch you on rookie, but when you put it on All Pro, you better have a killer offensive line, an awesome running game, big, sure-handed receivers, and a top-5 defense in the game that will score points for you, otherwise... ![]() |

He probably shit in the closet Matt Hasselbeck came out of.
But to answer your question, Dookie Davenport snuck into his ex GF's dorm room while she was sleeping, opened her closet door, and took a shit in her clothes hamper. Fuckin' shit in the fuckin' hamper. That's legendary. I was sad the Vikings didn't pick him up. ![]() |

Haha true, about the fumble... but hey, he got yardage... he just happened to leave the ball behind.
![]() But yeah, the way I see it... the closer a back is to a linebacker, the more punishment he can inflict and impose on the defense. Like you know in those old football movies when they give it to Kubiak from Parker Lewis, aka Jerry from ER, or whichever "big dude" happens to be on the team? They have a guy on each leg, and two people on their back trying to take the guy down... Really, you take a 210 pound back who can be tackled by a cornerback, how well are you going to tire out a defense? Granted, you've got backs out there, like Moe Williams, who never quit on a run, and have wicked leg strength who can push the pile... I just like the idea of giving a Ray Lewis or Julius Peppers the ball, rather than handing the ball off to Ronde Barber's IDENTICAL TWIN BROTHER. That's why I love Corey Dillon... he's not 260, but he's still a bruiser, and it's guys like him and Jamal Lewis who are breaking the single-game rushing records... not Tiki, not Portis... and you know why? Come 3rd, 4th quarter, that defense is sick and tired of working their ass off to bring the big man down. When you have a quick back, like we were discussing with a QB who can get rid of the ball... you get an elusive, slippery back... and you get him in your sights, you're going to crush him. You take a 260 pound bruiser, and you need to worry about bringing him down, not laying wood. You need to wrap that guy up, where's the fun in that? |

I have a question maybe someone can answer for me. I've been looking for the reasoning behind the Colts having to go to New England 3 (4?) years in a row. My question is basically .. Why? Why dont the Colts get a home game in the regular season against New England. I havent found a definitive reason.

Bruising backs are far less versatile, I'd much rather have the more athletic backs of the league. Kind of excited for the day Brandon Jacobs takes over. 6'4" 250lbs. and this dude has some speed.

Also, I kinda have a similar question to RP's about how they make up the schedule.. I've noticed that the rest of the NFC South have a very similar schedule to the Saints.. It seems everyone in the NFC South plays everyone in the NFC East and the AFC North.. Is this just a coincidence or is it always like this.. Like, one division plays two other divisions every year?? If so, this' the first year I've noticed..

Yes. Let me break this down:
We will use the NFC East as an example. This year everyone in the NFC East plays everyone from the NFC South and the AFC South. (So what this means is that each team in a single division plays two other divisions a year, and this rotates year to year.) This comprises 8 games of your schedule. Then there are 6 games, 3 home and 3 away against your divisional opponent. You're now at a total of 14 games. Then, based on your previous year's record, you play two other teams. For example those two teams this year for the Giants are the Seahawks and the Bears. The way they determine who plays home/away (now I'm not totally 100% positive on this portion but anyways) is whoever had the better record. For example the Giants played the Seahawks in Seattle this year because last year the Seahawks were 13-3 and the Giants were 11-5. The Giants and Bears were both 11-5 last year, but the Giants must have won the tie breaker. You're now at a total of 16 games, plus one week for a bye week. Anyways, right-o Kris, probably see you in the playoffs. ![]() |

A lot fast 250 pound guys land on defense, as well
Like when Kellen Winslow Jr came around everyone was like "Why the fuck isn't there more athletic guys like this dude?" Because all the athletic tight ends end up as defensive ends once they hit college. |

Deuce is 6'1" 232lbs.. He gained about 20lbs once he got to the NFL..
I think the combo of a big "power back" and a smaller "all over" back is the best.. I don't know why we haven't run Deuce and Reggie in Splitbacks yet.. Last edited by Kris P Lettus; 11-05-2006 at 08:20 AM. |

Yeah the combo thing is different from just a staright up short yardage back. I just think a short yardage back is a little unnecessary sometimes
