The show was awesome to me as a kid, but it hasn't held up well over time. Most of the fights are just basic slugfests, where as in the movies, they are much slicker, and not just because of the animation quality. They're just better put together with a lot more cool moments.

Personally I think it works better as a movie series.
Also helps that the movies didn't have to worry about manga related issues like the tv series did.
