Rate the Game: Week 144
Yeah, let's do this, baby! We keep on trucking here on Rate the Game despite the heat and the sketchiness of the forum's performance. It's bound to come to an end soon, no? Well, in the meantime, we've got things to keep us occupied. Our loved ones, our jobs, and of course, video games. Last week we dealt with the reboot of the Tomb Raider series. The question posed was whether or not it could fare any better than the original game, which has languished at the bottom of our leaderboard. The time has come, now that we have passed judgment, to determine where the new Tomb Raider shall fall on that same list. Show us the goods...
A respectable 3.75 average score puts the new Lara Croft in a position of scraping at the door of that tremendous territory of the 4s and greater. At number 65, her game appears to have had enough chops to win some respect over here, but it's a far cry from the creme de la creme. The games we've been getting in recent weeks have been acquiring some pretty decent scores. Can that streak continue? We need only go to the bowl for the answer to that question.... Ta-da! It's time that we go back to the past days of the Nintendo 64 and explore another key franchise of the company behind it. It's time we suit up and take flight one more time with Fox McCloud and company as we examine the 64-bit follow up to Star Fox...uh, Star Fox 64. We didn't get a Star Fox 2 (well, not for a loooooong time, that is) so this had to suffice at the time. How worthy of a successor was this game to the original? It's time to do a barrel roll and share our thoughts on this sucker. What do you all have to say about it? Let's do the rating thing and we'll see you next week! No matter what may happen to me, just remember Lzzy Hale gave me the bedroom eyes... ...again. |

This, for me personally, was the apex of Star Fox. I've not played any Star Fox titles since this one.
The game was so damn fun, the movement at the time was amazing. The Rumble Pack also enhanced the experience with great feedback. I remember yelling in awe the first time Fox said "Going into all range mode!" and you were given "free flight" in a contained boss area. The dog fights with Star Wolf and his team was the icing on the cake! That was some epiiiiiiic gameplay, especially when traversing the "hard" levels. Smashed the hell outta that game. Then I remember getting an issue of Gamepro that talked about the path to get the "best" ending (hard mode). Having to achieve certain objectives on certain levels (like shooting the railroad switches to destroy a boss). I remember a submarine level or two as well. I did end up beating the hard mode path as well. The final dog fight with Star Wolf's team before the Andross fight was VERY intense. Loved this game. I just watched footage of Star Fox Zero.... I need that now. |

I have played it!
But I barely remember it. I remember "do a barrel roll!" and "so, Andross, you show your TRUE form!" and that's about it. I do remember that I played it a bunch and enjoyed it, so I'll give it a 3. Entertaining but not completely memorable. |

4.
Enjoyed the game a lot and something I replay once every few years or so since its a pretty quick game to go through from start to finish on easy/normal route. Bought it a few years after it was released and it didn't come with a Rumble Pak so I didn't get to experience rumble in games for the first time with it. Closest I got to 100% completing it was getting up to the last 2 worlds on the hardest route and couldn't go any farther since the boss fight with Star Wolf was way too tough to beat on my own since Fox's pals are pretty much useless during it. Best I ever got was taking out two of Wolf's group before getting killed. |

I wish I'd gotten more time with it as the copy I played belonged to a classmate because it did play well. The franchise has never really been my bag, though. However, the multi-player was REALLY fun and worth the price of admission.
Damn, what was it with the Nintendo 64 that I had awesome multi-player experiences? Mario Kart 64. Duke Nukem. GoldenEye 007. No Mercy. Quake 2. Perfect Dark. It's probably rose-colored glasses syndrome, but those were some fun times. |

This was my issue with Playstation. I got one and remember getting FF VII. I recall then not having a memory card, so I'd leave the console on overnight // during the day. It worked..... for a bit. Definitely don't miss that shit. |
