Rate the Game: Week 45
Happy morning to the lot of you! Hope this finds you well and healthy. We've got the CONTAINER OF DOOM locked and loaded and ready to go for another week. Before we get to that we have other business to attend to. Namely, figuring out where last week's Mega Man 2 falls on our awesome leaderboard of awesome games rated by the awesome people of TPWW...which is awesome. It got a lot of love but let's see how it averages. Leaderboard, do your thing!
Mega Man 2 joins the crème de le crème and ties for THIRD PLACE alongside Donkey Kong and his fancy country. The Blue Bomber takes his spot among the elites here on TPWW. Who else is capable and worthy of joining that club? Let's find out as we do the drawing, shall we? Hickory... ...dickory... ...GOOSE! We're dealing with another gloomy morning so the lighting is fucked but this week's game to rate is Virtua Fighter from Sega. Is it better than Tekken? Does 3D trump the 2D entries such as Mortal Kombat and Super Street Fighter 2? What do you think? Rate and discuss and go in peace! No matter what may happen to me, just remember Lzzy Hale gave me the bedroom eyes... ...again. |

As an aside, we're heading into the final stretch here with the last five games left in the container. A special thanks to everyone that carried this sucker as far as it has.

Man, hard to look at these through today's glasses.
Young me remembers Virtua Fighter as the 1st fun 3d fighter I came across in an arcade. Virtua Fighter 2 reinforced that. Feel like I like it more than Tekken for sure. I gave it a 4 because of the nostalgia fucking with me. This and "Race Drivin" make me think of better days Last edited by drave; 02-08-2021 at 11:56 AM. Reason: words are hard |

Solid fighter that I wish got more love.
You see games like Tekken, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Soul Calibur get these fresh installments as time and gaming went by. V.F. 5, the last game in the series, came out almost 14 years ago. And, I'm not counting the spin-offs. . I'll give it a 3. |

I wouldn't be mad if you saved the best of the 5 for last so we don't end on a dud.

I'm with you on a lot of that but I'm going to be a bit harsher. I never understood why this was a big title for Sega. It controlled pretty poorly and like you said, the roster was unappealing to me. To this day I don't even know the story, if any, behind the game. Even with some of the lesser appreciated fighting games like Killer Instinct and Tekken, I knew some of what was going on and many of the characters had an intriguing to look to them. It succeeds on a technical level, sure but I've never had the urge to revisit it.

I'm sure it got better as the series went on but I never tackled any of them. I never owned any Sega systems and I was never inspired to (well, post-Genesis because I did think the Genesis was pretty boss) what with everything that was coming out from Sony and Nintendo. The arcade circuit where I grew up was pretty dry as it was even before the massive downfall so it's not like I could've given the sequels a try there either.

I played at at a local Putt Putt place. When a new game would come out, they'd hook it up to a bigscreen with a subwoofer and surround sound. It was cool AF, especially with Mortal Kombat games.
Outside of that tho, arcade scene was def dead. I want to go to Chicago once and visit their massive arcade, Galloping Ghost. |
