Rate the Game: Week 137
Yay, I get an early jump on this fucker. What is up, everyone? Hopefully you're all staying cool in spite of the heat. You know what's really cool? Rate the Game! Here it is in its 137th week and it's ready to deliver some more goodness. Here's something else that's cool. Our glorious leaderboard! It's here to show us just how cool last week's Ōkami is. How much bite did Amaterasu's first outing have?
Not bad at all. Landing at number 23, Ōkami manages to escape the fate of so many games we've had in recent weeks and break into that above 4.0 rating. It's still not an elite title, but it makes a strong statement nonetheless. Can any other game make a similarly strong statement, if not stronger? What's the bowl got for us this week? Here we go. This week we're going back to the past by examining a game that...takes us back to the past. It's one of the more well known reboots in gaming, NetherRealm Studios' 2011 relaunch of the Mortal Kombat franchise...Mortal Kombat. You can call it Mortal Kombat 9 or whatever, but for the purposes of this shindig, I will be referring to it as Mortal Kombat (2011). The original 3 games are already up on the list, but does this one game that tackles the entirety of those 3 games have enough to supersede them all? How does this entry fare with you all? Let's do the rating thing and we'll see how things go. Until next week! No matter what may happen to me, just remember Lzzy Hale gave me the bedroom eyes... ...again. |

I remember rolling my eyes at how they were basically going the time travel route of redoing things, but it ended up working out OK, especially with the gameplay being as good as it is.

Seems no one cares about this one. When one of the two votes is Lock Jaw, you know you're in trouble!

Perhaps the memories of Raiden vs. Shao Kahn are too traumatic.

Toss up between a 3 and a 4 but went with a 3 in the end.
The version I played and own is the Komplete Edition so it has all of the DLC characters and DLC packs and certain stuff unlocked right from the start so there was no need to grind it out with the game's towers mode. Had fun playing it and if I remember correctly, it was a lot smoother or easier to pull off moves and finishers compared to earlier games. The game's story can be boiled down to Raiden being a big dumbass who ends up being the root cause for almost all of the bad stuff happening despite being warned by his future self of it. Raider used to be one of my favorite fighters for MK games but this game made me hate him a lot and barely played with him in MK 11. Him being in the final fight with Shao Khan and the big spike in difficulty the game does for the boss battle also didn't help. |

Gave it a 3 because I can't remember which one this is. Stupid renaming of things because lack of creativity.

This was also where they started introducing "special guest characters" as DLC. Freddy Krueger was the first one here. And, was fun character to play as. |

I do remember Freddy and Jason both.
Seriously though....... Dear Gaming Companies, Stop using the same name for shit over and over. It's confusing to us middle-aged / old gamers. |

I mean, when you consider the fact that they basically just did the stories of the first three games and had almost every single character from those same games included, I don't know why they didn't just go with the title Mortal Kombat Trilogy.

Think about the digital storefront hell. We all know physical media (for gaming at least) will be non-existent within 50 years.
Now you have X amount of titles with the same name..... just gotta hope the screenshots, description and date of publish are accurate. Seems bleak. |

Between this game and the new MK game coming out, there are three MK games that are all technically MK 1 from a naming perspective. Gets a bit funnier when you consider that the main series only has 12 games so 25% of all of the main games are named either MK or MK 1.

Its's probably a 4 or even a 5 in terms of importance, as it's focus on single player content (that was actually good, unlike previous titles) changed the genre. That expectation of single player content has really expanded the genre and brought a lot of new players to fighting games.
Looked at objectively however, it's probably around a 3. |
