Rate the Game: Week 41
Returning once again for another edition of this lovely endeavor is yours truly. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was pretty much praised and now we take a look at where it lands itself among the rest of the pack. Let's do the leaderboard thing:
Well, that's certainly interesting. We had people claiming it's superiority to the original Sonic the Hedgehog but not only does it rank lower, it fails to crack the top 10 and finds itself in another three-way tie with its average score of a solid 4.0. I blame Q-Anon. Well, that's behind us and now we inch our way closer to the 50th title. Let's do this: Sir Mix-A-Lot over here.... ...and there we have it. So, yeah, the game to rate this week is...Tetris. Yeah...just...plain old...Tetris... Well, I guess puzzle games need some sort of representation here. What say you, the good people of TPWW? How does it rate with you? We're down to the final 9! Until next time... No matter what may happen to me, just remember Lzzy Hale gave me the bedroom eyes... ...again. |

Well, I looked it over and I did the math again for the original Sonic but it's still legit. Bear in mind that it had 12 people giving it a 5 which was more than what the sequel got. I don't know what to tell you.

Playing this when I was younger I had zero clue as to the history behind such a simple, unassuming, little game. |

In perspective, though I personally voted for 4, it is technically a "masterpiece" in that it essentially birthed a genre of games previously untapped. The closest we got to any type of puzzle game previous was either something gimmicky like Gyromite, or some sort of educational title; most of which were simplistic or low-effort. This game became something more. There aren't many people with any sort of access to technology on the planet that doesn't know what Tetris is. It isn't exactly the best game ever, but it's one of the most iconic games of all time. |

4. I gave it this not because I enjoy it but because I understand the importance and popularity of Tetris. Its a legendary game and one that will probably live on forever.
If I enjoyed it it would have gotten a 5. |

I remember play testing this as a kid in a Toys R Us store. Some Nintendo reps were there with an untitled game and wanted you to play it for 10 minutes.
I thought it was fun, but would rather play the other NES games out at that time. |

I think the biggest credit that I can give this game is that it was so accessible. Virtually everyone and their mother could easily understand and play it. Hell, my own mother, who hated video games, was and still is a fan of it to this day. It was one of the few games she could actually do without completely embarrassing herself. Thanks to the evolution of the industry, Tetris 99 was what allowed her to participate in her first ever online gaming experience. She even proudly owns a bunch of Tetris knick-knacks that I've given her for various Christmases and birthdays like salt shakers and ice cube trays. It's one of those rare games that breaks any limited definition someone may have for the term 'gamer'.

Oh, damn, I hadn't even heard of that. I've been on my Switch more often than I have my other consoles but I might have to give that a look. Thanks for the heads up.

Tetris 99 was fucking dope. Is it still around? I hope they keep it going for a while, me and my sister loved getting high af and just playing Tetris for like 7 hours when she came up here a year or so ago.
Anyway Tetris is an absolute classic. Simple and time-tested. Easy 5 for me. It does everything it sets out to do. |

Tetris is amazing, easy 10, one of the very best if not the best electronic puzzle games of all time.
