WWE NXT – July 20, 2010

Last week, Jack Swagger instructed Alex Riley to attack Matt Striker to make a statement. Tonight, Swagger himself did the attack, delivering a Gutwrench Powerbomb to the NXT Host. Swagger said there were no hard feelings, he’s just extremely frustrated after losing his World Heavyweight Title on Sunday. He needs to take out his frustrations, so he issues an open challenge to any NXT Rookie for a match right then.

John Morrison was thrilled to see his rookie Joe Hennig answer the call. Swagger and Hennig had a fucking awesome match (95% match quality, woot). Hennig had people thinking upset city, locking Swagger in the Perfect Plex formation, but Swagger punched Hennig in the stomach. Hennig went down, Gutwrench Powerbomb. Swagger wins. Hennig falls to 0-2 in NXT competition but with a performance like this you have to think he’ll be ticketed for stardom.

Kaval delivers a promo in his epic voice, but Ted DiBiase steps in and tries to take the credit and infer that Kaval should work for DiBiase. Kaval didn’t sound keen on that idea. DiBiase tells Kaval that EVERYBODY has a price, while eyeing the undefeated Eli Cottonwood (who walked by in the background).

Swagger stays at ringside as Alex Riley takes on MVP’s rookie Donny Marlow. This was pretty much the complete opposite of the opening match, and the 58% Overall rating completely tanks the show. Damn. Anyway, Riley dismisses Marlow with a TKO. Riley moves to 1-1 while Marlow falls to 0-2.

Backstage, we see Goldust lecturing Drake Brewer. Goldust attributes some of his success over the years to his persona. Goldust tells Brewer he should dress in all gold, wear paint, etc. Camera pans back to reveal Brewer just looking at Goldust like “you’ve gotta be fucking kidding me.”

Tag team main event here as Sheamus and Titus O’Neill have some unfinished business with Finlay and Johnny Prime. The rookies have some pretty good showings against both one another and the opposing Pros. With the rookies as the two legal men, Sheamus goes crazy and Brogue Kicks Finlay off the apron. Prime turns around Sheamus and chews him out, but O’Neill then turns around Prime and hits him with a huge DDT for the win. O’Neill gets his first win in NXT and is now at 1-1, Prime is 0-2.

Trent Barreta strained his tricep and will be out until September.
