Irrational Games reveals the upcoming Bioshock Infinite will have an extra mode being called the "1999 mode" which is separate from the game's story mode but shares some similarities to the original System Shock game.

Weapons, upgrades, and moral decisions done in this mode will have very specific outcomes. One consequence revealed was the need to manage save abilities with the potential for a permanent game over being possible if done incorrectly.

Quote:
Titled "1999 mode," this new addition exists wholly separate from the normal story mode, and allows players to experience an environment in which their weapon specialties, upgrades, and moral decisions will have extremely specific, and extremely rigid consequences on how the player is able to progress within the game. Even respawning will be tied to resource management in this mode, and if you run out of the resources necessary to come back to life, your game will officially be over.
The decision was made after a recent survey showed that a significant portion of those surveyed wanted moral choices to play a huge role in the game.
