The more I think about it, the more I think this was a total work. I was thinking they may have prepared for a few outcomes, but I’m inclined to think that if Rock had been cheered madly in the spot, they would have still found a way for the angle at the press conference to occur.

Rock may not want to do a full length main event match against Roman, just given the logistics — as talented workers as both guys are (Rock more mentally now). But Rock needed to come in and tease something with Reigns. The way they dangled Rock/Roman in front of people was just too clunky to be sincere build to that particular match.

I think they wanted to position fans more behind Cody (and eventually Seth), and Rock was probably planning to go heel from the start.
