JANUARY 7, 2005 - SMACKDOWN!

The first SmackDown! of 2005 is also the last show before the Royal Rumble, the official start of the Road to WrestleMania 21! Tonight, the last five slots on the Rumble match will be determined, and our main event will be a 10-man Rumble preview featuring members of the Elite!

We open things up with a Rumble qualifier pitting two of the most exciting superstars of the Cruiserweight division against each other. Chavo Guerrero and Akio put on a very exciting match, but eventually Chavo's experience wins out as he hits his trademark Brainbuster for the win.

The 27th slot on the match is on the line next as Brian Kendrick takes on a down-on-his-luck Chris Kanyon. Ever since Kanyon's partner Billy Gunn announced his relationship with Rico Constantino, Kanyon has been struggling. Tonight, he hopes to bounce back at the expense of exciting youngster Brian Kendrick. Kendrick puts up a hell of a fight, but he falls victim to I'm Betta Than You, giving Kanyon another shot at "Gunnstantino" in the Rumble match!

More exciting Rumble qualifying action takes place next as newcomer John Morrison takes on Carlito! It's been a great night for cruiserweight action and Carlito inks his spot in the Rumble match tonight when he puts Morrison away with the Backcracker.

ECW alumni Nova and Nunzio go at it for the next-to-last Royal Rumble berth. These two have lit up arenas worldwide since Nova's WWE debut (and, of course, before that in ECW), and tonight is no exception. Nova misses an elbow and walks into a dropkick. He bounces back for a suplex attempt, but Nunzio flips out of it and lands on his feet. He drops down and grabs Nova's tights and rolls him up for a cheap pin. After the match, Nova jumps Nunzio and they brawl up the ramp and out of sight. Nova gets a small measure of revenge, but Nunzio is the one going to the Rumble!

John Layfield is in the ring now, awaiting his opponent. No one is quite sure he'll be facing until Layfield's old APA theme hits and... Oh, my God it's Ron Simmons! Ron Simmons has been out of action since shredding his knee in a match on September 11, 2003! Since then, Layfield has had a complete attitude change, and Simmons doesn't seem happy about it. Unfortunately, after being out for 484 days, Simmons has a fair amount of ring rust and the match is pretty bad. Eventually, Layfield hits the Clothesline From Hell for the win, and the former tag team partners brawl all the way backstage. John Layfield has clinched the thirtieth and final spot in the Royal Rumble!

Pre-taped comments from RAW Superstar Shelton Benjamin are shown, talking about his Rumble match against Undertaker and the Rumble itself. Every time Shelton starts to look like he's on the verge of something, Undertaker gets in the way, and soon Shelton is going to see to it that this roadblock is removed, permanently.

Test comes to the ring for his warm-up match for the Rumble, and is opponent is high-flying newcomer Air Paris. Test dominates early with brawling, kicks, and punches. Paris fights back with a sweet spinning kick and a flying reverse elbow, but Test winds up eventually hitting his running big boot for the win. After the match, as Paris is walking up the ramp, Test jumps him and hits a big clothesline. Test has momentum going into the Royal Rumble!

Four more Rumble participants are in tag-team action next as the Dudley Boyz take on Gunnstantino in a battle of fan-favorite teams. These tag specialists put on a good match that is unfortunately marred by the interference of Billy Gunn's former colleagues Avery Thompson and Mark Henry, allowing D-Von to hit his lifting reverse DDT for the win. After the match, Thompson and Henry go after Gunnstantino, but the Dudleyz get involved and it turns into a three-team brawl! Referees come out from the back and finally get them all separated.

The other qualifier from last week, "Nature Boy" Dave Batista, is in action next as he takes on Cruiserweight Champion Paul London (who is only two days away from defending his title against Matt Hardy Version 2.0 in a falls-count-anywhere match)! London continues his climb to the top as he puts on a clinic. He hits London Calling, but before he can get the pin, Hardy jumps him and gives him a disqualification win. London, though, manages to fight back and drive both Hardy and Batista away.

After the break, Hardy is back in the ring for his match against The Hurricane! These two put on the ninth-best match of 2004 at WrestleMania XX, and tonight they stake their claim for a top ten berth once again. Hardy picks up the clean win with his middle-rope legdrop, but his celebration is short-lived as London returns to the ring with a steel chair and lays him out!

And now for our main event! It's a ten-man battle royal featuring members of the Elite that previews the Royal Rumble match we'll be seeing on pay-per-view in just two days! Eddie Guerrero is the first casualty as John Cena takes him out. Brock Lesnar takes out Eddie Guerrero shortly thereafter, then also takes out his frequent tag partner, the WWE Champion Tajiri! Lesnar continues to dominate as he throws Cena to the floor! Yet another tag-partner betrayal happens as Chris Jericho throws Chris Benoit to the floor. After quite a bit of fighting between our final five, Christian eliminates the World Champion Rhyno! Then there were four - Brock Lesnar, Christian, Chris Jericho, and The Rock! Lesnar's run comes to an end as Rock dumps him over the top. Christian does the same to his former championship partner Jericho, but walks right into a Rock Bottom and an elimination. The Rock picks up the win, and he's got all the momentum heading into his WWE Title match against Tajiri this Sunday night! You don't want to miss the Royal Rumble!
