Personally, I just love it when these Japanese companies put a lot of their folklore and culture into some of their games. It's a fun way to learn about stuff like that. Ōkami is, of course, littered with it, but then you've got stuff like the beetle hunting in Super Mario RPG or the various robot designs in Mega Man games. The Silent Hill games are also loaded with it. They're like little Easter eggs.
