JANUARY 28, 2005 - SMACKDOWN!

Last week, Ron Simmons turned on John Morrison to align himself with his former tag team partner John Layfield, reforming the APA. Tonight, Morrison looks for revenge, and he's bringing Joey Matthews. It's M'n'M versus the APA for a shot at the World Tag Team Titles! Simmons has definitely lost a step, and it plays a big part in this match's rating unfortunately. Matthews tries for a suplex, but Layfield catches him with a low blow while Simmons has the ref's attention and turns it into a small package for the cheap win. After the match, the teams brawl up the aisle and out of sight, but the APA have earned the title shot!

At Superbrawl, "Nature Boy" Dave Batista will be going one-on-one with his old rival Rico Constantino, but tonight Rico's partner Billy Gunn will look to slow the monster's momentum. He puts up a great fight, but Batista's manager Theodore Long distracts him at an opportune moment, allowing Bats to hit the Batista Bomb and pick up the win. After the match, Rico's music hits, and he makes the save, preventing any further damage.

WWE Women's Champion, the Elite Diva Mickie James is backstage, and she cuts a promo. Basically reminding us that she still exists and is still, in fact, Elite. Unfortunately there are no Divas on SmackDown! for her to fight, so... uh, hi!

Monday night, Brock Lesnar decimated Axl Rotten after vowing to squash his way through the ECW Originals on his way to his Superbrawl match with Rob Van Dam. Tonight, Lesnar faces Nova, a superstar on the verge of stardom. Nova puts on a much better showing than did Rotten, but he too eventually falls victim to the F5. After the match, Lesnar jumps Nova in the aisle with a brutal clothesline and a series of stomps. Brock Lesnar looks like a man possessed!

The Dudley Boyz won a fatal fourway last week to earn a shot tonight at Los Guerreros' World Tag Team Titles. We now know the winners of this match will have to take on the APA next week on SmackDown! The two most popular teams on SmackDown! put on a great match, and Eddie Guerrero looks like he's about to secure a successful defense after hitting Bubba Ray with a frogsplash, but Tajiri hits the ring out of nowhere to cause the disqualification. Tajiri continues the beating for a moment before fleeing in the face of the other three.

Chris Benoit and Christian are backstage. Chris Benoit has been sitting on a title opportunity for seven months, while Christian will get his in less than two. The co-contenders cut a promo about Rhyno and The Rock, saying that their time as champions is quickly coming to an end. Christian does most of the talking while Benoit seems much more interested in his Money In The Bank briefcase.

Rico Constantino makes his second appearance of the night as he faces off against Randy Orton in a battle of two of SmackDown!'s top upper-midcarders. Great match between the two ends with Orton hitting the RKO for the clean win. After the match, The Hurricane comes down with a chair and blasts Orton with it, continuing their feud.

Speaking of great matches, our next contest is an exciting high-flying affair between The Hurricane and Chris Jericho. Tremendous contest that sees Hurricane nearly pick up the win with his Shining Wizard, but Randy Orton breaks up what could have been the winning pinfall, resulting in a DQ. After the match, Orton and Jericho double-team Hurricane until Intercontinental Champion John Cena comes sprinting down the aisle to drive off the heels.

World Champion Rhyno and WWE Champion The Rock are backstage in a near-mirror-image of the Benoit/Christian promo from earlier. Doesn't take a genius to figure out that these four will be involved in the WrestleMania title matches, but who will face who and what condition will everyone be in with as much time as there is to tear each other apart?

Two men who held the WWE Title last year go head-to-head next as Cruiserweight Champion Matt Hardy Version 2.0 takes on Intercontinental Champion John Cena! Hardy is still trying to climb back into the Elite, and he puts on a great showing against Cena but - like so many matches tonight - it's marred by interference. Cena wins by disqualification after Chris Jericho gets involved. Rey Mysterio makes the save with a chair, saving Cena from too much damage at the hands of Jericho and Hardy.

Tonight's main event is a definite contender for Match of the Year as Rey Mysterio and Tajiri put on an absolute classic! Rey gets a great nearfall with a flying cross body, and Tajiri gets one with a second-rope back heel kick. Great back-and-forth action until Matt Hardy Version 2.0 takes out Rey with a chair, allowing Tajiri to roll him up for the cheap win. After the match, Eddie Guerrero makes the save and the best friends stand tall as SmackDown! goes off the air.
