JP Morgan bankers were enjoying a quiet dinner at the Manchester Art Gallery on Thursday night after the first day of the National Association of Pension Funds conference when three dozen Manchester United fans stormed the room. Chanting and singing, they overturned bottles and poured wine over dinner jackets. There was no violence except against Henry Tapper, head of sales at Zurich, who burst into a Chelsea football song and was promptly head-butted.
Fortunately, his only injury was a split lip. One of the guests, Tommy Docherty, the former Manchester United manager, restored calm by telling the gatecrashers to leave. Most obeyed but there were still a few stragglers to arrest when police arrived. JP Morgan, which is backing Malcolm Glazer's bid for Man U, declined to comment. However, the bank is so scared about staff safety it has removed its stand from the conference. Fans 1, JP Morgan Nil.
