Like I said about Brian Kerr: he gives other players a chance, players who are pushing for a place in the line up or who are young and need experience, but he doesn't fuck up his system. The players play in their best positions and the positions they would take in a competitive game.

It means you don't end up with 8 or 9 lads who don't know each other, playing for half an hour out of position, with nothing learned about them or their ability at international level, or about the system as a whole.

Sven just uses it as a chance to throw out caps, not realistically look at players who are going to do the business.
Yeah i agree with that, don't get me wrong or anything, i wasn't defending the decision to play Johnson out of position but i just feel he deserved his chance, given the number of goals he's scored for a struggling side. I reckon Sven only used that system to keep the SWP fans happy as he could play on the right, and to keep Beckham in, i don't expect him to use anything other than 4-4-2 in competitive games, so his mistake really.

Johnson may not be in the same league as Owen as a forward, but it's taking a look to see how he copes incase Owen is injured or something. Then again you can just look at Everton, sold their best player last summer but it's worked out for the good of the team and if Johnson or whoever helps the team better than Owen, regardless of who's better, then that is my main concern.

But yeah, Sven knows he's not going to drop Owen, Rooney, Beckham e.t.c, so friendlies may aswell be used to give potential left midfielders 90 minutes to stake a claim from an England point of view, everything else apart from the central defensive pairing is done.
