At the end of the day, the only judgement you can make on both of them is from 30 minutes of football.
Johnson was played out of position. He's not Bellamy (bad example I know) who has pace and can cross a ball, Johnson is an out and out striker and he should've played there.
From what I've seen, Downing hardly touched the ball, and in 30 minutes of an incredibly poor, slow paced match, he was hardly gonna have the chance to shine.
Not really sure about the match as a whole as I was watching Ireland as well.
