Indy gaming is really on the rise. CO:E33 Hot on the heels of BG3 plus games like Sea of Stars and the thriving retro inspired indy scene...AAA really isnt keeping up.
And it makes sense that it would struggle. There's too much risk with AAA. A single game failing could put a thousand people out of work. That is going to create an industry that must be risk adverse out of necessity.
What would be ideal is a return to more double a type titles. Lower budgets with lower risks. Squares team Asano had adopted this strategy and they were able to use their profits to help fund their bugger projects but after their AAA games lost too much money (Avengers/Babylons Fall/Forsaken and even games like FF7R2 underperforming) theyre choosing to bizarrely back off their midtier titles that were turning profit in pursuit of the white whale of success.
The industry is in a bad place but i hope games like this show a path to success to the major studios that allows creativity and ideas to be what gets green lit over safety.
