Pushing Kyle O’Reilly is a huge head scratcher. Fine tag wrestler and undercard guy but he shouldn’t be getting main event spots vying for a world title chance.
The battle royal also stunk. Very little star power and no stories told at all. If they want Wardlow to chase the TNT belt, have Paige and Sky eliminate him. Have them screw over Rusev so there’s some heat going into his match with Ethan Paige.
Jurassic Express should’ve been in there and had something with the Bucks and the Hardys to help get something going there before their ladder match.
Same goes for the Jericho feud with the BCC and Santana and Ortiz.
The beauty of a battle royal is you can advance stories and have guys lose the match without making them look bad. Tony missed the boat on that, in top of going with a completely wtf winner to wrestle against a guy who wasn’t top ranked to begin with.
I mentioned why I really liked Eddie as an interim champ. I also think Darby would’ve been perfect. For similar reasons as Eddie; super over, he’s perfect as interim champ since it won’t count but it gives him a rub, and though he’s not great on the live mic, his vignettes are usually pretty great and he’s just got a unique vibe to him.
There’s also a plethora of challengers for him and he’s the best underdog they have. He would’ve been perfect. Him beating Moxley in a roll up in the same way he beat Cody to win the TNT title is believable. Him going into All Out against Punk, presumably in Chicago, in a rematch from last year where, but now for the undisputed world title, is another great story. Plus we now it’s Moxley v Tana. They could’ve been a fun match with Darby.
Now we get what likely need a good but completely uninteresting match where Moxley , who’s better than being a placeholder champ, against Tana, who shouldn’t be AEW champ under any circumstances.
Huge missed opportunity and bumbling booking by Tony. Easily the least interested I’ve been in the company going into the ppv.
