The Exorcist-8/10
Was scared shitless of this movie growing up. I was raised very Catholic. Went to church, was baptized, got my first communion, confirmation, etc. I watched this the first time when I was 12 or so and the idea of possession and the devil was very real to me, and I’ve avoided a rewatch for years.
But the misses wanted to watch it so we threw it on. It’s a slow burn to start, but I love the story slowly progressing and breaking down the mom’s attempts at logical, scientific and sensible reasons as to why her daughter’s going insane, only to give in to worsening desperation to seek out the church.
I also love how the movie doesn’t beat you over the head with religion. Father Damien, great name, is losing his faith to start the film and admits as much to a fellow priest. And even when he’s confronted with Regan being possessed, he still tries to be logical until it’s undeniable, and of course that’s where he finds his faith and purpose again for just a few fleeting moments.
The movie isn’t scary in a traditional sense. Non believers or non religious people, like myself these days, won’t get scared. But it’s still very disturbing, the scenes of Regan slowly losing herself are great and disturbing and the medical stuff we see her go through are scary and claustrophobic in their own right.
