Setting aside the irrelevant comparison to AEW…
You don’t book a 100,000 seater stadium in the hope that you fill it 2/3s full. That’s just basic business sense and optics. This is a company that inflate their attendance regardless of how good it is. Now, they could claim a bomb scare and move to a smaller venue…
There’s a lot to this beyond the product being flat (it is). They’d have booked the venue 3 years ago (I think), didn’t they have to shuffle things around due to covid? Wasn’t 37 supposed to be in Texas? Mania benefits from an international audience which will still be impacted by official restrictions on travel and/or a malaise to international travel - there’s a group of people that don’t fancy the hassle or sitting in a tube of other people’s breath.
There will also be a contingent of people just waiting; what does travel look like? What are infection levels? What’s the card(s) going to look like? Is Austin Theory going to main event?
Some people will point to trying to get Austin on the card as a desperation move, I think it’s most likely been in the works for a while; they’re not just going to give Austin 2 months to get ready after 20 years out of the ring.
