At least back then cable was a growing industry and wrestling was at the forefront of it as a primary entertainment medium. There was also the real chance that one could genuinely go belly-up. There was actual tension there with WCW acquiring legitimately giant stars and Vince needing to create his own.

This is like the Monday Night Wars if only both shows failed to gain any traction in 1998.
