Seems ESPN taking away the more valuable of the two NHL contracts in terms of Stanley Cup airings was a key reason why NBC eventually pulled out from the negotiations and opened the door for Turner to step in.

At one point they were offering more money than what was their final offer to keep the NHL but that changed after ESPN snagged the first deal.
