Yes, they won the demo, nobody ever said they didn't. The meme is that when they lose the overall rating, they go extra hard pointing out that they won the demos. That even when they lose, they still won because of winning the demos.
That's the joke, it was not meant to be anything other than a joke. Gertner was the only one that got it.
