People don’t kill themselves because they want to die. They kill themselves when the pain caused by their mental illness outweighs their ability to cope with said pain. It’s a war of attrition that takes place over a long period of time. So it’s something she probably has been dealing with for a while now.

That said, I don’t think the role that people on social media played in her death should be downplayed. Especially considering she directly mentions it in her final farewell tweet.

It’s one thing to fight severe depression. I couldn’t even imagine trying to fight it while hundreds of people are sending you death threats and telling you to kill yourself on a daily basis.
