A Most Violent Year-8/10
Oscar Isaac plays Abel Morales, a seemingly self made immigrant who owns a fuel distribution business. His trucks have been getting hijacked, and as he's trying to close on a new facility, the ADA begins an investigation into his company and we see that, despite his seemingly genuine intentions, he can't help but get caught up in the corrupt world in which he's dealing with.
Oscar Isaac is magnetic. It's a slow burn, deliberately paced but gripping crime drama and Isaac carries the movie with a silent, confident and almost naive charisma in his character. Jessica Chastain plays his wife, who's very much hinted at being a dime store mob boss daughter who isn't anywhere near as smart or savvy, and much more emotionally charged in decision making. Albert Brooks is also in it, playing the couple's lawyer and advisor. He's unsurprisingly great in the screen time he gets.
But really, this movie is all Oscar Isaac. His character is the central focus and he's damn near in every scene and reminds you of how great a talent he really is.
