Instead this has been something that's been self-inflicted for years and only now has gotten to the point where its becoming impossible to ignore or sweep away. WWE's biggest blunders were not learning their lessons from the booking mistakes with the Cena era and not grooming Cena's kids market to be their future core viewers.
In the span of a few months, WWE went from being one of the hottest properties in television to now being closer to "ice cold" status. If they were a regular tv style show, they would have been canceled by now and the only reason it hasn't happened is due to their ability to provide weekly content without needing seasonal breaks.

Or, basically, not wanting Cena to begin with, then eventually sacrificing all up-and-comers upon his altar and not building anyone new until there was a "dire need"... exactly the same reason they decided to even push Cena to begin with.
Nobody's important until we need them to be important, but by the time that happens, they have usually bottomed out that pity well with the fans.
