Doubt he's lying but he did have a very long bout fighting off and rehabbing from the disease.
Either way, by the time he's cured WWE was no longer interested in him as a wrestler and he wasn't interested anymore in going back to his usual style of wrestling. Him getting outed as having Hep B pretty much is where you can pinpoint when his active career ends.
Even if he didn't retire in 2011, about a year later is when the Abdullah the Butcher scandal occurs involving the Hep disease which probably would have killed whatever chance he had left of ever wrestling in the WWE.
