I finally got around to checking the Women's Title history on WWE.com. I heard a bit online from people a bit confused about it, because there used to be a Women's Championship, so obviously it would tap into that lineage. But this new belt is more a continuation and "upgrade" of the Divas Championship, which was unified with the old Women's Championship under Layla.

For those curious, on WWE.com they list the current belt as the "WWE Women's Championship," whilst the old title is just the "Women's Championship." They seem to only officially put "WWE" in front of titles that they consider to be on the "World" level.

Eg. The United States Championship doesn't have a "WWE" in front of it; nor does the Intercontinental Championship, Cruiserweight Championship or Light Heavyweight Championship.
