Yeah, I bought a cheap Y cable and plugged in an external drive. You could maybe get away with a single connection, but they recommend two just to be sure that the drive is getting enough juice.

There's no negative impact to running stuff off the drive. As Hasney said I think it might actually be faster depending. For a while I was using just a Sandisk USB stick. You can do that as well but people get terrified.

Nintendo games seem to be tiny. SM3DW is like 2GB or something.

I do wish I'd got more stuff digitally. I don't fully trust it yet, but I am somewhat done with the big stack of game cases you end up with. I generally buy digital now. It just sticks in my craw when it's still £49.99 vs £10 for a used disc copy sometimes.
