The original idea I had for this feud was a Joe attack (possibly with a couple other angry indy vets from NXT or something) on Cena to cost him the title and put him out of action. Actually taking advantage of his vacation to build a story as opposed to him just leaving which was beyond retarded.

Then you can have Joe spend a month and a half (which was pretty much the length of the Owens-Cena feud from start to finish. lol) explaining his actions while competing in and dominating a tournament to win the US title.

When Cena comes back, it's in the build to the rumble so we get to hold off the big showdown for another month since they're both in the rumble. Joe's indy henchmen are able to take Cena out before he's able to even get his hands on Joe.

Cena wants Joe and the US title now at Fast Lane but Joe says "no" because he wants to use Cena to create the WrestleMania moment he should have had a decade ago. He makes Cena put his career on the line at WrestleMania against Joe for the US Title. (Fastlane features Cena having to go through Joe's henchmen)

And there you go. You've spents 5 1/2 months letting the anticipation build to one big match instead of the same boring "match, rematch, rubber match" formula being squeezed into a month and a half.
