It's confusing and stupid.
But the jist is Sony would rather Marvel Studios make blockbuster Spidey movies and get some money out of it, then have Sony Pictures limp along until they literally can't afford the sinking ship (and then Marvel gets it back anyway). Spidey heading to the MCU this way makes sure Sony gets money for his film appearances. This wouldn't even be on the table if Sony was confident their studio could knock it out of the park.
There's rumor that Marvel Studios is so sure of this outcome Spidey had a slot in a draft of Civil War, but Sony's waiting it out on the off-chance Amazing 3 is spectacular or whatever.
Amazing 1 was so-so and I did like Amazing 2, but I think Spidey's going home by Phase 4.
