When box office rises after premier it's usually a word of mouth thing, and signals major DVD/On Demand sales later on. I agree that the norm tends to be a drop off after launch, and this success is certainly something worth looking into for other studios. Here's some thoughts off the top of ma head:
- Chris Pratt is insanely likable, and echoes a kind of hero we haven't really seen in a while.
- The 'Space Opera' was largely ignored for a long time, and one done with sincerity probably scratched an itch Jupiter Rising and Star Wars 7 will capitalize off.
- The very idea that a talking raccoon is on the team probably moves tickets to this day.
- It has a peculiar direction and soundtrack just goofy enough to work.
- It doesn't really look and play out like a superhero movie.
- Thanos threatened to bath the cosmos in our blood. Naturally we had to see it to save our lives.
