Well, it's largely a comedy book, so I doubt being taken seriously is that big of a concern. I'd also say she's more on the Plastic Man end of the spectrum of stretchy-powers, which isn't all that different from your Mister Fantastics or Dhalsims of the world, just a little more creative with the stuff she transforms into.

On the subject of characters than can and should always be taken seriously, though, I've started reading Magneto's solo book. And it's pretty hardcore-- he's like the mutant version of the Punisher now.
