It's interesting how two FPS games are coming out (Titanfall and Wolfenstein) that are catered to completely different crowds. Personally, I prefer a single player experience, and then afterwards I'll play some MP, and if it's a lot of fun, I'll keep playing.
People don't buy COD games for the story, like people don't watch Fast and Furious movies for the story, it's the action and instant thrills. I think there's also the problem that single player FPS games have become increasingly linear and full of QTEs, where people prefer to play how they want and move around the maps how they please.
Half Life games on the other hand, now there's a FPS where you'd be pretty annoyed if they release the next one without any single player.
