The Mets have promised Terry Collins that his job is safe for this year and his contract status will be revisited at the end of the season. More troubling though, reports out of Mets camp is that Wally Backman has ZERO chance of managing the team despite him moving up the ranks of the organization. They feel he would be too much of a headcase to deal with the NY media.
Because why would you ever want a manager that the players have raved about and that would rejuvenate the fan base? I'm sure the Bob Geren Era will inspire more confidence.
