Jericho returns and says that being put on the shelf by The Shield made him realise that he's not going to be able to do this forever, and there's only one achievement he has not held in his WWE career -- he's never been the US Champion. Cesaro comes out and says that he wants to face an American for the title at WrestleMania and Jericho points out that he was born in New York. Jericho starts a "U-S-A! Y-2-J!" chant. Cesaro says that he will gladly defend the US Title against Jericho at WrestleMania...if he can answer Cesaro's challenge:
Cesaro and Jericho will each face former United States Champions. If Jericho can beat his opponent quicker than Cesaro can beat his then Jericho can have his match. Qualifiers: Jericho must win his match and Cesaro gets to choose the opponents. Jericho points out that this is clearly rigged but Vickie Guerrero excuses herself and says she loves the idea and pretends to be attracted to Cesaro (sells his international lover gimmick). Jericho says that the odds are stacked against him but he believes in the power of "U-S-A! Y-2-J!" (Jericho does this a bit tongue in cheek)
Later that night, Cesaro awaits his former US Champion opponent -- Zack Ryder. Cole and Lawler sell that Cesaro's got size and power over Ryder, but do put over Zack's heart. Ryder goes full steam ahead against Cesaro and is easily overwhelmed at first, but manages to counter some of Cesaro's big moves, and even turns a Neutralizer attempt into a bridge pin for a close two count. A Rough Ryder attempt is caught and turned into a power move by Cesaro, and his finisher ends it at around six minutes or so, Cesaro slightly frustrated by the time, but he does get to choose Jericho's opponent on SmackDown.
Jericho awaits his adversary in the ring on "Friday night," and it turns out to be long-term rival Dolph Ziggler. Jericho looks slightly dismayed, not because he is facing Ziggler, but because he knows he has to beat him in six minutes to get the WrestleMania US Title match. Jericho and Ziggler work the best five and a bit minute match they can, as a further teaser as to what these two men can do together, but eventually The Miz pops up at ringside and distracts Ziggler. Jericho manages to get a sneak roll-up for the three count on Ziggler before the timer runs out -- thus becoming the new #1 Contender for the United States Championship!
Antonio Cesaro (watching from the stage) is absolutely horrified at this idea, and he goes to take out Jericho, but gets a Codebreaker for his troubles. Jericho holds up the US Title to close the segment between the two. On RAW, The Miz and Jericho team up to face the team of Ziggler and Cesaro, with the babyface team winning when The Miz pins Cesaro after a sneaky Codebreaker from Jericho. The weeks go by with that sort of stuff. Jericho and Ziggler can even blow-off their little rivalry with a one-on-one match on an edition of Main Event.
Cesaro and Jericho work a ten minute match at WrestleMania, where Cesaro gets to show off his power and skill against Jericho. Cesaro is too strong for Jericho to lock in the Walls of Jericho on him, and a Lionsault from Jericho only gets two on the Swiss Superman, which shocks the former headliner. Jericho goes for a Codebreaker, but Cesaro catches him and places him on the top rope. Cesaro hits a few European uppercuts on Jericho perched on the top rope, and then maybe even hits a springboard variant, or something like that. Cesaro goes for a top rope superplex to finish Jericho off, but Jericho blatantly shoves his fingers in the eyes of Cesaro and pushes him off the top rope. Jericho comes off the top with essentially a Flying Codebreaker to finish Cesaro off for three.
As Jericho celebrates with the US Title, having become only the third man in history to have held every current WWE championship, The Shield attack Jericho again and level him with their Triple Powerbomb. Ambrose calls out their opponents -- Randy Orton, Sheamus & Big Show -- for their six-man tag as Jericho is helped to the back.
After The Shield's match, Matt Striker is seen backstage with Jericho, who is getting treated by the trainers. Striker asks Jericho how he is feeling, and Jericho says some words about how he's hurt, but he did it. Cesaro then suddenly attacks Jericho from behind, and even tosses around some security guys who try to back him off from Jericho.
This, of course, leads to a rematch between the two down the line.
