Based on recent patent leaks, Sony could be toying around with the idea of possible implementing a new advertising system which would automatically pause whatever game or service is being used in order for an ad to pop up and play on the screen.
The user would have no control over when the ads would appear nor any way to stop them until it finishes. The only warning will be another pop up warning the player their game will be interrupted soon for a paid advertisement to be shown.

The patent, discovered by webforum NeoGAF, was filed back in July 2011 under the moniker "Advertisement Scheme for use with interactive content." This scheme will warn players that their game is about to be interrupted momentarily with paid content, such as Sony's example of a soda commercial, before gameplay stops for a quick commercial. Once it's over, gameplay resumes.
It will also be possible for players to "rewind" a portion of the interactive content after the commercial.

Sony did something similar with Wipeout HD but with the ad playing during a loading screen. The problem was the ad couldn't be cancelled and the race wouldn't start until the ad was done which basically extended the loading of the game every time a new race was done.
