EA released their financial report today revealing Star Wars TOR is losing subscribers again, new Need for Speed confirmed, and the plans to invest around $80 million for initial next gen games.
In terms of the stock market, EA's stock dropped by 10% after the fiscal report was announced with the details involving Star Wars Old Republic being the main reason.
The MMO game of Star Wars The Old Republic, another 400,000 subscribers have dropped out since February leaving around 1.3 million users left. None of the special promotions and free month deals have been effective in keeping subscribers.
A new Dead Space and Need for Speed game have been confirmed to be in development with a Spring 2013 release expected. No details were revealed about the new Dead Space but its assumed Criterion is developing the new Need for Speed game.
The company itself is undergoing a "restructuring" phase with massive layoffs expected to the amount of around $40 million needing to be saved.
Quote:
* EA spending $80 million on next generation development (it's calling it “Gen4”) over the next year.
* 11 million users are currently using Origin, and the service generated $150 million in 10 months.
* As rumors have suggested (also, logic), there’s another Need For Speed game coming later this year. It should be Criterion's turn.
* Another Dead Space game was mentioned, but no details. I wonder if the snow planet rumors are true?
* The reception to The Old Republic is, in EA’s eyes, in line with “original assumptions.”
* The company will undergo a “restructuring” between now and September 30 that will result in layoffs. It’s unclear how many employees will be impacted, but since it’s going to cost EA about $40 million to “restructure,” that’s not a very good sign.
* A bunch of stuff about EA pushing deeper and deeper into social/casual gaming.
* No PopCap news, which means EA did not announce Peggle 2.
