Pretty good article about the American setting. Highlights some of the complaints such as lack of large cities.
Some of these points are dumb.

Look, New York City had plenty of big structures, but who needs big structures when you have trees to hide in...heh.

Truth be told, I'm not exactly a big fan of trying to play it both ways at once. Thing is, a good chunk of New York wasn't built that high at that point. That's the sort of thing that takes a lot of time and either a lot of need or a lot of excess, neither of which New York City would be known for for a few decades.

And part of the reason these games are fun is parkour. hiding in trees isn't quite the same.

Look ma, my history is shit!

Or maybe it's just a slight bigoted notion that Injuns used tomahawks and whites used swords.

Colourful characters.

Okay, I kinda like this one, actually, but they have to walk almost as fine a rope with George Washington as they do with Muslims being portrayed. Amurrrrrricans, one of the big game-buying audiences take their founding fathers seriously (albeit unrealistically).

Ubisoft's only saving grace here is that they're in France, which most Americans can't find on a map. Or spell.
