Double Fine and Tim Scaffer held a public online fundraiser with the goal to generate around $400,000 within a month as part of their plan to fund a classic Point-and-Click adventure game as their next project.

While the genre itself is no where near as strong as it was during the late 1980s and early 90s, Schaffer wanted to relive part of his past development with a brand new adventure game in the classic point-and-click style.

The goal was to set the development of the game to around 6-8 months and a release date of late 2012 for Steam. Knowing that they wouldn't be able to bring in a big publisher to help fund the game, they decided to hold a public fundraiser on Kickstarter. The initial goal was about $400,000 in 33 days.

The end result ended up having the goal surpassed within a day as the initial amount was raised within hours and the first day shattering the all-time record on Kickstarter for both amount ($600,000+) and contributors (16,000+). As of the time the report was updated, over $1 million was raised so far.

It is also assumed the large amounts in both funds and backers is related to the news days earlier of Notch and Mojong willing to help fund the development of Psychonauts 2. This could have convinced people to help support that game's development by over-donating so the leftover funds are used to help develop Psychonauts 2.
