More likely it's the multiplayer mode.
And for the record, the only comeback mechanic I hate is the fucking Blue Shell. I have absolutely no problem with Ultra Moves, K-Meter, Desperation Moves, X-Factor, Rage, Death Streaks, or anything else that keeps people in the game no matter how obvious or under the hood it works. If you're good you'll work the metagame. If you're bad you get victimized. The only comeback mechanic that legitimately rewards a bad player is the fucking Blue Shell. Fuck that thing.

I have to agree here, really. The Blue Shell is pretty ridiculous. Especially because if you're doing bad enough to get one, you already have almost no hope of winning anyway. Short of a massive clusterfuck at a bottleneck, I've never won a race in any Mario Kart game using the blue shell. It just fucks over whoever is number one and maybe one or 2 people without the sense to move when they hear the fucking thing approaching behind you. Since I'm usually top 3 (Mario Kart is the one racing game I've historically raped at), I tend to get get fucked out of victories when the blue shell is a-comin'.
As for comebacks in fighting games, the mechanics are usually subtle or they have a limited window or they have awkward execution methods/horrible recovery times. They're not meant to be crutches, but they can turn the tide in an instant
if you know what you're doing.
