Before the company had hinted the decision was due to the large gap in years from the previous game and because the reboot was occurring on consoles instead of the more RTS-friendly PC platform. The reboot was also been seen as an attempt to see how popular the XCOM series would be to the current market.
The boss also managed to completely ignore the hype and sales StarCraft II and other big name RTS games still have in the market with even Halo's own RTS game selling about a million copies.

Kinda absurd. To begin with, I was young during the 90's but I don't remember games like XCOM being all that popular. They were popular but I don't think the most popular. XCOM was very unique and customizable and that is why people loved it. Another shooter..yay?
