The next game in the Smash Bros series might take much longer than expected as Project Sora said in an interview that the studio was completely caught off-guard when Nintendo announced a new game in the series at E3.

According to the original plans by both Nintendo and the studio, the next game in the series was meant to be only on the 3DS but the sudden announcement at E3 of a Wii U version caused a lot of the early planning and initial development to be scrapped.

Quote:
"With this I don't have the time for that. I won't be able to look at every aspect of the game and balance out all the characters by myself this time. I'm trying to think about how this is going to work out, but probably I'll have to discuss it with my future development team. The future of this project really depends on the people I can get involved with it."

Sakurai also said that the original plan was to get a team together to work only work on a Smash Bros 3DS game after Kid Icarus was completed but this plan changed, after Iwata had shown him the Wii U.

"If we went solely for the Wii U, the HD graphics would really bump up the visual effects, but then we'd be stuck in another arms race. If we made this [Wii U] game another extension over previous [3DS] one, we'd have to cut out the new things we could possibly do on the 3DS hardware and compete with ourselves again over the size of the character roster and the amount of gameplay... It wouldn't be a fruitful competition."
Currently the studio has no plans to work on the game any time soon due to their current priority to Kid Icarus on the 3DS and a couple other projects. The studio itself also isn't large enough to work on 2 top tier titles at the same time and would need more help due to the problem of having to create separate assets for both games.

Nintendo is rumored to be involving another studio they own to help Project Sora once development actually starts.

Quick News Round-Up:

1) After some digging around on Steam, a few people discovered the PC versions of Final Fantasy VII and VIII are currently on Steam and have been there for months but disabled for sale. Also discovered from the files were Square-Enix attempt on tweaking the game to run on current PCs with graphical and gameplay enhancements but for unknown reasons ended up dropping work on the project.

2) Epic Games could be reconsidering supporting the PS3 after Bulletstorm barely managed to 1/4of the Xbox 360's version while the game combined barely reached 1 million sold. This would make the 2nd big title from Epic Games to "fail" or bust on the PS3 in comparison to the Xbox 360 and PC.

3) Based on some leaks, Sony is planning to continue the current tradition of re-releasing games as sets with the Uncharted series, Resistance series, and Ratchet & Clank bundles are all planned for a 2011 release date. Each of the sets will contain something related to an upcoming game in the series while only the Uncharted bundled was confirmed to be $39.99.
