So, I think they fucked the WM build this year.
Why did we suddenly go from Miz/Orton and Cena/Punk to Orton/Punk and Miz/Cena?
Here's how I would have done it (as if you care):
IMO they put the belt on Orton far too soon. The momentum behind an Orton title win was growing but not at fever picth. He shouldn't have beaten Sheamus at Hell In A Cell. Instead, Miz should have caused a DQ loss for Orton by taking out Sheamus and cashing in his MitB briefcase to win the title (Orton would be out cold as this happened). This takes Orton out of the title picture as it's now Sheamus who is guaranteed a rematch for the title he lost.
Orton is pissed at this and makes the case to the Anom. GM that he should be inserted into the title picture. The GM states that Orton lost his match against Sheamus and as it was his last chance against him his title shot is DENIED. Basically the GM blocks Orton's attempt to get to the title. The GM is revealed to be none other than Michael Cole.
The bromance love that Cole has for Miz has been laid on thick and Cole will now do all he can to keep the belt on Miz, even going as far as to create a new Corporation-style faction around The Miz. I'm thinking Cole, Miz, Alex Riley, maybe someone like Shad Gaspard as muscle for the group, and a couple of others for good measure.
This would obviously leave 2 big heel factions on Raw, so Cole either ships Nexus to SmackDown or disbands the group entirely. In fact, if he shipped half of them to SmackDown (to whittle down their numbers) you could send Barrett, Slater and Gabriel where they could still create The Corre. You could still do the whole "Cena is fired thing" but bring the storyline forward a bit and do it properly leaving Cena off WWE programming for a while.
Back on Raw, Cole is stacking the deck in Miz's favor when it comes to having to face Orton. The Viper has to "jump through hoops" to get a title shot. In a Number One Contenders Battle Royale you have him beat down and eliminated by all of Cole/Miz's new faction. Basically, Orton has to fight his way through the entire faction before he can get to The Miz. I'm looking at this like what Austin had to go through to get his title back in 99.
In this time you could still do the programmes with Morrison and The King as they aren't seen as such huge threats and hey, someone has to contend for the title, right?
Meanwhile, Orton is slowly working his way through the Cole led group, sustaining and building on the momentum that was growing behind an Orton title win prior to the HiaC PPV. Orton eventually wins his shot at Miz only for Cole to come out and say "Congratulations Randy, you earned your shot. Sadly you won't have time to cash it in because you've just been traded to SmackDown".
Orton goes to SmackDown, Punk comes across to Raw (which means Edge didn't go over to do that stupid angle with Kane).
Once on Raw, Punk sets about rebuilding the Nexus in his own image and lifts the ban on Cena to show how he is more compassionate that Cena is. You then go with the Punk/Nexus v Cena storyline from there leading to a match between the two at Mania.
We get to the Rumble and Orton wins. You know what this means...he gets a shot at either the WHC or the WWE Champ who is still The Miz. Orton chooses the latter of course. Orton FINALLY gets his shot at Miz and a chance to FINALLY grab the title. Which he does at Mania.
Which leaves us with the original setup of Miz v Orton for the WWE Title and Punk v Cena. You could also throw King & Morrison v Cole & one of his faction on to the Mania card.
Whilst he's limited in the ring I feel they could have gotten much more out of Orton's face turn and title win than they did. Which is pretty much the entire basis for my idea.
