Maybe they don't think an actual SSX game would go over well. This way, they have the name. It's a name people know, no matter how different the product is, people will buy it on name value alone.
If they had any inclination to actually make another SSX in the old style it would be made. Maybe they don't think it will sell. I don't think the Wii version did well, but I'm not sure on that.
Regardless, I don't have a problem with them reinventing it as much as I have a problem with it becoming a sim. But I do agree that, realistically, it should be a separate franchise.
