It does kick up and get pretty good at about the halfway point,(Coincidentaly, post-90's. Imagine that.) but it never really gets great. Was surprised, as I'm a big fan of Grant Morrison, but his early work is just really generic, and doesn't take any of the bold moves that he's known for.
Then I got The Tornado's Path, which is the first trade in the third, and current volume of the Justice League. Just read it and holy shit, it's miles above any of the JLA trades. It's actually better than a lot of the big crossovers I've read. Planning on getting every trade now, like I did for JSA.
On a side note, I have to mention one gripe I have with the industry today, and that is this trend of releasing generic covers that just have a pin up shot of the main character or team standing there looking impressive.. Those are fine once and a while but for years now, most issues do this. I miss the days when the cover told you what was happening inside.
That was the best part about 52. Every single cover was awesome and involved the plot of the story within. I actually just ordered a trade that is nothing but the covers from 52. Just amazing work, right there.

Haven't read any of the old JLA stuff, but have read the current Justice League series from the beginning. It starts off great, with tons of potential, but kind of... I dunno... just dies. Only now is it starting to recover again.
