Apparently some companies think Valve and Steam are killing the PC market mostly because of how efficient and good Steam is. Some retailers and Digital Distributors in the U.K. are already telling some gaming publishers they will refuse to carry games that require Steam or be playable on the service (ex. Steamworks).
This was one of the actual reasons given to why they hate Steam:

"Publishers don't give a shit, they don't care what happens to the customer. Which is the crucial point, because Steam do," the director of "a fledgling Steam rival" told the site.

Its assumed most of the "hate" is coming from Direct2Drive and other distributors and are actually willing to kill their sales if it means they can also kill off sales for Steam. Retailers threatening to drop PC games makes no sense since they make the money off of the game sold and not Valve if its a boxed copy.
