Looks like the Sonic Cycle might strike again after all with Sonic Colors (Wii and DS only).

Sonic Team admits they changed parts of how Sonic's traditonal play style to now more of a mix of Mario and Sonic style to please Nintendo gamers and get new people to support Sonic.

Quote:
Sonic Team's Takashi Iizuka tells IGN: "From a general game design perspective, in recent years we've been able to introduce Sonic to new fans, a lot of the Nintendo/Mario fans, and because of that, we've made changes to the design, and we've designed things in Sonic Colours that we think will really appeal to people who are unfamiliar with the Sonic brand and the Sonic gameplay."

"So from that perspective we hope that fans of Mario will really be able to enjoy playing as Sonic in Sonic Colours."
It's not completely changed to a Mario style but at the same time there is some differences from the old Sonic style.

This marks the 1st potential bad news for the game and it didn't have to come from videos or screens since those made the game appear to be a return to classic Sonic.
