SEPTEMBER 17, 2004 - SMACKDOWN!

Nine days from Unforgiven, and the card continues to take shape. Last week, a match was set up between Eddie Guerrero and Christian... until Christian injured himself in his ladder match with Rico. Eddie is expected to issue a challenge to a replacement opponent tonight! Plus, two former WWE Champions go head to head in a WrestleMania XX rematch as John Cena takes on Brock Lesnar in our main event!

But first, it's a six-man tag match pitting Cruiserweight division stars Brian Kendrick, Funaki, and Jamie Noble against Dave Batista, John Layfield, and Nunzio. Nunzio gets kicked around by all three opponents to start until he manages to tag in the Nature Boy, who turns things back in his team's favor. Kendrick is next to take the brunt of all three until he tags in Noble, who winds up putting Nunzio away with a Tigerdriver for the surprise win.

Chavo Guerrero put himself on the map two weeks when he took Intercontinental Champion Jeff Hardy to the limit before ultimately coming up short. Tonight, he hopes to continue his forward momentum against the cocky Carlito. Another good match that ends with Chavo hitting his Brainbuster for the win.

It's another six-man tag match next as the three members of the New Generation take on the Dudley Boyz and Aaron Stevens, who is still trying to find a new partner after recent injuries to The Hurricane and The Blueprint. Solid match that ends with Christian York getting Stevens to tap out to the Irish Cloverleaf.

Paul London and Rico make their way to the ring. They grab microphones and bring up Undertaker and Damien's open challenge from RAW. They say that they may not have experience as a team, but the theme of SmackDown! lately has seemed to be young Superstars getting noticed. And at Unforgiven, they're going to make a name for themselves by beating the rookie monster and possibly the greatest Superstar in WWE history!

They face their first test next against former World Tag Team Champions the Metro Connection. Decent match that shows that London and Rico can work together, as London winds up pinning Kanyon following London Calling.

Rey Mysterio will be facing Brock Lesnar in nine days, and tonight he has a tune-up match against the young high-flier Akio. Rey looks like he's about to put Akio away when Lesnar hits the ring and drops him across the top rope throat-first. The referee misses it, but he doesn't miss Akio hitting Hang Time for the upset victory! After the match, Lesnar enters the ring and blasts him with an F5 to leave him laying.

Eddie Guerrero comes to the ring for a promo. He talks about how he was supposed to be facing Christian at Unforgiven in a match that was going to put them both on the match, elevate them both from the upper midcard into the main event. But then Christian had to go and hurt himself last week, and now he's left without an opponent. But the goal remains the same. So he's issuing a new challenge. He couldn't help but notice that Intercontinental Champion Jeff Hardy was without an opponent for the PPV, too. So if he can't make a name at Christian's expense... he'll do it at Hardy's!

The Japanese Buzzsaw Tajiri, the WWE Cruiserweight Champion, heads to the ring next for a title defense against Nova. Nova has been tearing through former ECW superstars over the last two weeks as a build-up to this match, and tonight will be fought under Hardcore rules! They stay away from using weapons, with the exception of Nova dropping Tajiri face-first on the announce table, but back in the ring, Tajiri manages to blast him with the Kick of Death to retain the gold. Tremendous match from two great stars.

As we now know, Eddie Guerrero has challenged Jeff Hardy to an Intercontinental Title match at Unforgiven. Jeff's brother Matt will be defending the WWE Title against The Rock as well. Tonight, it's a huge tag-team showdown! In the closing moments, Rock tries to suplex Matt, but Matt catches him with a low blow behind the ref's back and rolls him into a small package for the win! The Rock has been screwed! After the bell, the two teams brawl up the ramp and out of view.

And now for our main event, a rematch of the WWE Title match at WrestleMania XX, it's John Cena against Brock Lesnar! The match doesn't quite live up to their contest from six months ago, but it's still good. Eventually, though, in a moment of confusion, Tajiri hits the ring and blasts Cena with the Kick of Death! Lesnar picks up the win, then the Dangerous Alliance goes to work on Cena until Rey Mysterio hits the ring to drive them off.

Cena grabs a microphone and issues a challenge to Tajiri for Unforgiven as payback for screwing him tonight. The Buzzsaw accepts! What a match that's going to be! We're out of time! Vintage something!
