AUGUST 27, 2004 - SMACKDOWN!

The last SmackDown! of August will culminate in a massive Summerslam rematch as the Hardy Boyz defend their World Tag Team Titles against the team they won them from, The Rock and John Cena in a hardcore match! Plus, a 20-man battle royal to determine a #1 contender for Jeff Hardy's Intercontinental Title - a title match that will be held next week on this show.

The show kicks off with a six-man tag match pitting all three Dudley Boyz against the up-and-coming New Generation stars BJ Whitmer, Christian York, and Trent Acid. The Dudleyz triple-team Acid to start the match until Whitmer tags in, allowing them to turn the tables and isolate D-Von. Eventually, Acid meets Spike up top and took him over with a super Frankensteiner for the win. A big win for the newcomers!

Twenty SmackDown! superstars hit the ring next for a shot at the Intercontinental Title. Nova is the first victim, courtesy of a spinning back kick by Zach Gowan. Aaron Stevens quickly takes out Chris Nowinski as well. Brian Kendrick is the third casualty, taken out by Carlito. John Layfield takes Mark Henry out next. Stevens gets his second elimination of the match as he takes out Akio. Carlito also gets his second elimination as he dumps out Gowan. Johnny Jeter is next out, thanks to Generalin Intikami. Matt Stryker takes out Colt Cabana, only to quickly get taken out by Jamie Noble. Layfield gets elimination #2 as he dumps out Jay Briscoe, and we're down to ten superstars left. Nunzio is the next man to fall as Chavo Guerrero takes him out. Intikami is out next, giving Aaron Stevens his third elim. Chris Kanyon takes out Funaki and Layfield back-to-back to join up with the double-elim stars. Stevens takes out Noble, and he's now taken out 1/5 of the stars in this match! As he celebrates, though, Kanyon gets his third by dumping him out, then follows up by taking out Carlito. It's down to Kanyon, Chavo Guerrero, and Dave Batista for the title shot. Chavo takes out Kanyon, then nails Bats with a brainbuster, then tosses him out for the win!

Chavo cuts a quick promo about his title match next week. Short and sweet, but it gets the job done.

Up next, it's two of the top stars of the Cruiserweight division (and SmackDown! in general) Rey Mysterio and Christian going one-on-one! They put on a match that most definitely doesn't disappoint. Eventually, Christian hits a fallaway slam on Rey and distracts the ref, allowing new Cruiserweight Champion Tajiri to hang Rey out across the top rope, allowing Xian to put him away with the Unprettier! After the match, Rey fights back, driving off both heels.

Rey grabs the mic after the match and cuts a promo about how he thought this business with Tajiri was over at Summerslam. But if he's so dead-set on doing it again, let's do it!

Tajiri's got his first title defense next against Rico. This match isn't quite as hot as the previous one, but both men still look fantastic. The champ hits Rico with a big kick to the face and amid the confusion, Christian hits the ring and blasts Rico with an Unprettier. Tajiri gets the cheap pin! After the match, Christian hits Rico with two more Unprettiers before walking away.

After the break, a badly-beaten Rico struggles to his feet and talks up the feud with Christian. Pretty similar to Rey's promo from earlier. These feuds need to end, and they need to end now!

Paul London is one of the very best bumpers in wrestling, and he's up to the task next as he takes on Brock Lesnar. London gets in enough offense to where he looks fantastic, but eventually Lesnar's power is just too great and he picks up the win with the F5.

It's more exciting Cruiserweight action as WCW alumni Eddie Guerrero and Billy Kidman go at it. Eventually, Eddie picks up the win, hitting his frogsplash after a big spin kick.

Matt Hardy makes his way to the ring for our main event, but he's cut off by The Rock. The two go face-to-face and almost come to blows until an army of referees can separate them until it's time for our main event. Rock clearly took offense to Matt hitting him with the Twist of Fate at Summerslam!

And now it is time for our main event as John Cena and The Rock cash in their rematch clause in a Hardcore match for a shot at the Hardy Boyz' World Tag Team Titles! Rock hits Jeff with a shoulder tackle while Cena hits a DVD on Matt. The challengers are fired up! Double suplex on Jeff, then Rock whips Matt into a table that's been set up in a corner. Jeff breaks a hammerlock on Cena while Matt hits a rolling kick on Rock. Matt hits a legdrop on Rock, sending him through a table! Jeff hits Diamond Dust on Cena, allowing Matt to hit Rock with a spinning back kick. Jeff hits the Swanton Bomb and the champs retain as SmackDown! goes off the air.
