As far as I know what causes lag is the internet traffic of the host (Player who is designated as such) and it really is a HUGE fucking buzzkill, you are ripping through a map and just about to win and BAM! There goes everything.)
Happened to me earlier in my best ever performance in a Team Deathmatch. The host died 17 seconds before the end, didn't even attempt to migrate to a new host.
